Red Day Lily Watercolor

Here is my latest, worked from a photo of day lilies I took at McKinley Park last weekend. All those roses were so cliche'. ;) I used masking fluid and gum arabic for the first time. Fun.

What are the masking fluid and gum arabic for? (I actually typed gluid at first. That should be a word.)

Masking fluid is something you paint onto the watercolor paper wherever you want to protect light areas. Next you paint the background washes or dark tones of your subject. Then you just rub the fluid off with an eraser and whatever was covered will still be white.
Gum arabic adds a gloss and color intensity to your work and it can be painted on after your work is done for this purpose. Or it can be used as a thinner to the watercolor as you work to change the flow of the paint.
